A $400,000 grant from the Toyota USA Foundation has provided seed money for University of California to expand a math and science summer school program for high school students.

The grant will alow the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science, called COSMOS, to expand to a fourth UC campus. The program is currently offered at UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis.

Officials have not yet determined which campus will host the new program, which is expected to accommodate students in 2005. Last summer, 450 high-achieving high school students attended the month-long, residential program at one of the three participating campuses.

The Toyota grant will cover half of the planning costs to establish a new site, as well as half of the operating costs of the program's first year. Program officials will approach other foundations that have expressed interest in providing matching grants to the program to obtain additional funding.

Applications for next summer's program can be submitted between Jan. 15 and March 15. Apply online at www.ucop.edu/cosmos
