Disappearing act: There will be a total eclipse of a full moon Thursday. The moon will be in partial eclipse when it rises above the southeast horizon about 7:38p.m., and will fall entirely within Earth's shadow at 8:13 p.m., when the moon is 5.7 degrees high. Suggested viewing spot Riley Wilderness Park, near Coto de Caza. Go east on Oso Parkway, from the Santa Ana(I-5) Freeway. Tuesday: Sue Trumbore will give a talk titled, "Forest, Carbon and the Future," 7:30a.m., University of California, Irvine, University club. Trumbore is director of UCI's Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics. She analyzes the movement of carbon dioxide between the soil, plants, trees, and the atmosphere. Reservations: (949) 824-4613. Notebook: Chemist A.J. Shaka and other UCI faculty are installing a $1.5 million, 800-megahertz nuclear magnetic resonance machine in Natural Sciences 1. The instrument is essentially a large microscope that examines molecules that could be useful in drug development.
