UCI professor gets $1 million

IRVINE- A climate researcher at the University of California, Irvine has received a $1 milion endowed chair from the Kavli Foundation, a gift that could lead to new environmental technology.

Professor Michael J. Prather said that because other Kavli Foundation chairs are engineers, he hopes he can work with them to develop technology that could help humanity deal with future climate change.

"This opens up new opportunities to investigate environmental issues, environmental technology and environmental policy," Prather, 55, said Tuesday.

Santa Barbara entrepreneur Fred Kavli is a leading private supporter of scientific research.
