Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric researcher F. Sherwood Rowland left Monday for Johannesburg, South Africa, to serve as a civilian delegate for the United States at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Rowland, a University of California, Irvine, chemist, is scheduled to give an update on the impact that various types of gases are having on the upper atmosphere.

Rowland shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in chemistry for the discovery that chlorofluorocarbons are destroying part of the ozone layer, which helps protect people from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

The summit will address environmental issues involving the land, sea and air.
